With the symbolic installation of the 6,000th kilometer of optical cable, Germany’s leading telecommunications company, WEMACOM Telekommunikation GmbH, has reached a significant milestone in the extensive state-supported broadband infrastructure development. Since 2016, WEMACOM Telekommunikation GmbH has been working intensively to build a modern internet infrastructure across four districts in the federal state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, providing high-speed connections to tens of thousands of households.

A ceremonial event in Ludwigslust was attended by WEMACOM management, representatives of the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania government, business, and media—right where this large-scale project began nearly seven years ago. The event was opened with speeches by Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania’s Minister of the Interior, Construction, and Digitalization, Christian Pegel, district authorities, and other industry representatives.

This achievement is symbolically comparable to the distance between Schwerin and New York, highlighting the significant leap made to provide full access to digital solutions in rural and less-developed regions. Behind these 6,000 kilometers stand impressive figures: 22,000 km of laid fiber, over 100,000 households, over €1 billion invested, and the close cooperation of more than 1,000 local and international partners.

We are proud that LEC was one of the cooperation partners in the implementation of this important project. With its experience in optical network construction, the company contributed to both route construction and the implementation of technical solutions. This partnership demonstrates our capability to participate in major European infrastructure projects.
